Number Roll

A Montessori Math lesson for 3-6 year olds at home

This Math lesson helps your child with number recognition and prepares them for higher levels of mathematics.

I purchased the numbers and markers at the Dollar Store. I bought the fabric at Joann Fabrics.

Materials:

Small container, box, bowl, or basket

Wooden numbers ($ store craft area)

Piece of fabric 18 inches long, I used felt you could also use pellon

Permanent red markers ($ Store)

Lesson:

  1. Bring the lesson to the table.
  2. Roll out the letter roll.
  3. Take one of the numbers out and say, “Do you see a number that looks like this?”
  4. Lay the number down on its match.
  5. After you have done this with a few numbers, ask your child, “Would you like to do the rest by yourself?”
  6. When your little one is finished, show them how to roll up the fabric and put the lesson back on the shelf.

Extension for this lesson:

You could extend this lesson by replacing the wooden numbers with a number of objects. For example, if it is the number 3 then have the children find three objects from the house to put under the 3 on the number roll.

*You could make the material for the roll much larger, I just bought material from the shelf. You would simply need to have it cut at Joann’s instead to make it a larger size.
