Matching Letter Sounds to Objects

A reading and writing lesson for 3-6 year olds!

This exercise is for your homeschool preschoolers or Mammas who just want to bring a bit of education into their home. It could be done with either younger or older children, but is typically done with 3-6 year olds. Remember, each child is an individual and has a unique learning timeline.

Learning to read and write is an exciting part of the preschool and kindergarten years. Here is a fun way to teach the initial sound in a word and match it with the correct letter.

All these things are from the Dollar Store, and the total cost was $5.

Supplies you will need from Dollar Store:

letters (I cut up a teachers bulletin border that had the alphabet)

small objects (I used truck and car erasers and plastic animals in the party favor section)

Small plastic or wicker basket (came in a pack of three)

Cut up letters into evenly sized cards and find objects that correspond with the beginning word sound. Group into three sounds per basket. Too many in one basket will be overwhelming to a young child. As they get stronger, add more letters and objects.

Start with the letters that only have one matching object and then you can add more as they gain confidence. Make sure to only have a few letter sounds in a basket.

Lesson:

  1. Show your child the basket on the shelf and demonstrate how to carry it nicely to the table or a rug.
  2. Take out each letter and call it by the sound it makes. Then lay it across the top of the table or rug.
  3. Next, take out the objects one at a time, saying the name and placing them on the table.
  4. Make sure to ask some questions like, “what sound do you hear first?”
  5. Place each object on the letter card that it corresponds with.
  6. Finally, show the children how to clean up and place it back on the shelf, telling them, “you can choose this anytime you want.”
*If you have space in your playroom or homeschool room, organize the children’s shelves according to subjects. As well as from left to right according to difficulty/progression.
