A Montessori Math lesson for 3-6 year olds at home
This Math lesson helps your child with number recognition and prepares them for higher levels of mathematics.
I purchased the numbers and markers at the Dollar Store. I bought the fabric at Joann Fabrics.
Materials:
Small container, box, bowl, or basket
Wooden numbers ($ store craft area)
Piece of fabric 18 inches long, I used felt you could also use pellon
Permanent red markers ($ Store)
Lesson:
- Bring the lesson to the table.
- Roll out the letter roll.
- Take one of the numbers out and say, “Do you see a number that looks like this?”
- Lay the number down on its match.
- After you have done this with a few numbers, ask your child, “Would you like to do the rest by yourself?”
- When your little one is finished, show them how to roll up the fabric and put the lesson back on the shelf.
Extension for this lesson:
You could extend this lesson by replacing the wooden numbers with a number of objects. For example, if it is the number 3 then have the children find three objects from the house to put under the 3 on the number roll.
*You could make the material for the roll much larger, I just bought material from the shelf. You would simply need to have it cut at Joann’s instead to make it a larger size.
