Wet Pouring: A Montessori Practical Life Lesson

This lesson will help develop your Childs fine motor skills, visual discrimination, concentration, and their independence. Remember to use beautiful things you find at the thrift store, because when they break, and they will, you can replace them easily.

Supplies you will need:

Tray

2 small pitchers

colored water

small sponge

Teaching the lesson:

  1. Bring your tray to a table that is safe for water spills.
  2. Pick up the left pitcher full of colored water and slowly demonstrate pouring water to the other pitcher. Remember to be silent and slow.
  3. Ensure all the water is out by looking inside the pitcher and giving it a little shake, demonstrating that it is empty.
  4.  Place pitcher down on the tray and use the sponge to wipe off the spout and the tray of any spills or drops of water.
  5. Take both pitchers off the tray, wipe off the tray with the sponge, and place filled pitcher of water on the left and empty one on the right.
  6. Say to your child, “would you like a turn?”

That is it! The key is to go slow and use your facial expressions to entice your child.

Kids love water so let them explore and have fun. Continue to make it more difficult by moving to a small pitcher and two or three containers to pour into.
